New-York-based Michael Weintrob is the formal photographer of the 43rd Barcelona Voll-Damm International Jazz Festival. “we came across him whenever I required an image of [jazz concert producer] George Wein once we offered the great impresario with his trio last year, ” claims Joan Anton Cararach, the event manager. (Barcelona is a sister event on Newport Jazz Festival, established by Wein.) “I saw Michael working quite difficult in New York and Newport, and I actually liked his approach to live show photography.”

Weintrob occupied the Gran Hotel Havana, event head office, starting Oct. 26. During festival, he became anything of an anchor resident and a self-described “camp counselor” to journalists covering the occasions on a temporary basis.

Fifteen photos from Weintrob’s portraiture series, InstrumentHead, had been exhibited when you look at the hotel lobby, through help from U.S. Consulate in Barcelona. “InstrumentHead is a project I’ve been working on for five years, ” states Weintrob. “they truly are surrealist portraits of performers, and I also’m wanting to tell their particular story without witnessing their particular face. In Barcelona, Weintrob spent their days shooting artist clinics, carrying out pupil workshops, and talking during the Catalan Institute for photographer. During the night, he captured the shows and special activities, spread-over 30 days, that are collectively referred to as Barcelona Jazz Festival. “It is a big honor to have a surrealist exhibition in Catalonia, your home of surrealist art and a place where Dali, Miro and Picasso all made a direct impact.”

“Michael was already set to arrive at Barcelona, and so I believed it might be a good idea to make him our formal photographer, ” Cararach states. “I adored the thought of having a photographer from abroad discover the festival — our venues, our general public, our love for meals and wine. He is working hard, but he is having fun. I’m pleased to see my event through their eyes. He’s become a real Barcelonian.”
